Coastal Access podcast wins Canadian Podcast Award
The Right of Way podcast teams proudly announces that it has won the honour for Outstanding Science Series at the 8th Annual CANADIAN PODCAST AWARDS! These awards spotlight the best in Canadian podcasting, honouring creators, editors, and producers who captivate audiences across the nation.
Launched in 2024, Right of Way is a 12-episode research-driven podcast that uses rich storytelling to explore the issue of coastal access in Nova Scotia. In short, how do Nova Scotians and visitors to our province get to our coastlines, and what happens if they can’t?
Right of Way is the flagship podcast of the Coastal Access Project, run by Dr. Hannah Harrison and Nicolas Winkler, and is an ongoing collaboration between academia, NGOs, and communities to better understand how to protect access to Nova Scotia’s coast. The project is supported by an Independent Research Grant from the Royal Canadian Geographic Society and the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
With nearly 400 podcasts nominated, industry professionals and fellow podcasters meticulously evaluated submissions. The winners were ultimately selected based on the collective expertise and insights of this esteemed community. John Leschinski, Founder of the Canadian Podcast Awards, noted, "The calibre of winners like Right of Way showcases just how deep the wealth of talent in Canada is, and how well it reflects the diverse attitudes, opinions, ideas, values, and creativity of Canadians."
“We are so excited and grateful for this recognition,” said co-host Dr. Hannah Harrison, assistant professor at Dalhousie University and leader of the FishPeoplePlace lab. “It’s an honour to be recognized by our peers in the podcasting industry, particularly for such a niche scientific topic. Coastal access has never been more important in Nova Scotia, and we are deeply appreciative to all the community groups and individuals who took part in the podcast. It’s time for our province to take serious steps toward protecting access to our coastline.”
“The stories we showcased in Right of Way are an urgent caution to Nova Scotians that ongoing loss of, and barriers to, coastal access will shape who gets to be on the coast for decades to come,” said Nicolas Winkler, ocean photographer and filmmaker. “We are deeply appreciative of our funders whose support allowed to make these coastal access stories available to a wide audience.”
The winners were unveiled during an exciting streamed ceremony featuring notable Canadian voices and industry leaders. This milestone marks an exciting chapter for Right of Way as it continues to engage and inspire listeners nationwide.
This year’s event was proudly presented from George Brown College School of Media and Performing Arts, a leader in preparing students for Canada’s film and television industry, and sponsored by Shure, a global leader in audio equipment trusted by creators worldwide.
Additional support came from AmberMac Media, Web Hosting Canada, PodCamp Toronto and Leschinski Design.
