FPP at AFS-AIC Meeting

A few weeks ago FPP lab community members Nicole Cameron, Rachel Bratton, Lily Orlando, and Hannah Harrison attended the 50th Meeting of the Atlantic International Chapter of the American Fisheries Society. We traveled to Nova Scotia’s rainy south short at White Point Beach Resort and what warm welcome we received at the event!

Hannah attended this conference a couple years ago and was so impressed by the student-friendly atmosphere and the hands-on involvement of fisheries professionals in Atlantic Canada to host the meeting. This year was no different, and offered a great chance to reconnect with our management and scholarly community.

Lily gave her very first conference talk on her research into Local Catch Canada’s seafood harvester network and efforts to identify everyone doing direct-to-consumer seafood sales in Canada. Despite some technical hiccups that required some mid-talk fixes, Lily’s talk was well-received and garnered some great questions from the audience.

Nicole also gave a talk and poster presentation about her ongoing PhD work on the human dimensions of aquatic invasive species in Nova Scotia. Having fisheries managers in the room to hear and ask questions about her talk gave helpful insight into how this work is being understood and what questions to ask going forward.

And, a huge 'thank you!' to the organizing committee and all the great folks we had a chance to meet. We feel so lucky to have these types of events close to home.
